The Maltese was sharp in the driving seat, earning the comfort of a double break in the following game to lead by 3-0.

However, Brogan kept up her resolve and reversed the narrative in the next three games to even the score at 3-3. Despite this, Curmi switched pace and secured a break back in the next game, before holding on serve to nudge forward 5-3.

The Briton held relatively comfortably to maintain just the difference of a single break and to keep the set alive. She then levelled things as Curmi attempted to serve out the set, breaking to love to extend it at 5-5. As Brogan returned on serve, Curmi earned two break-points but Brogan cancelled both before holding with the first deuce. Using her momentum, the Briton secured the all-important break to take the first set 7-5.
