The Assikura Women’s League will start the final phase with a bang as the match between leaders Birkirkara and fourth-placed Mgarr United will enjoy increased viewership. This is since the top-four opener has been picked for broadcast on the national sports channel TVM Sport+. The match will be played at the Centenary Stadium this Thursday 18th at 20:15 CET.

Thursday will mark the opening of the final phase of the league with a double fixture, as leaders Birkirkara take on fourth-placed Mgarr United in the top section, while Mtarfa meet San Gwann in the bottom section.

The clash between Birkirkara and Mgarr United will be the first domestic league match to be broadcast this season. It also marks the first women’s football match, pertaining to local teams, to be showcased since the UEFA Women’s Nations League finale of Malta against Latvia in the beginning of December.

The broadcast pick provides a window for new supporters, coaches and aspiring players to flow into the domestic game. It also provides an opportunity for those in foreign countries to take a peek at two sides of the Maltese league. By extension, with a number of foreign talent on both teams, the broadcast also provides a rare opportunity for those wishing to follow their stars in their journey in Malta to follow a full match rather than catch bits of it from photos and clips of video. This is since the channel can also be watched online here.

Defending champions Birkirkara have won the first and second round matches between the two this season thus far and are yet to concede a goal against Mgarr United, making them favourites in the clash. However, Mgarr United have shown sparks of brilliance in attack during the season and, inspired by a new coach in Patrick Curmi, they will be searching to make amends.
