Birkirkara Capitalise on Key Moments Against Hibernians To Claim First Top-Three Win

Share

Birkirkara produced a disciplined and efficient performance to defeat Hibernians 3–0, claiming their first win — and first clean sheet — against top-three opposition this season on Friday. Kleydiana Monteiro Maria Borges opened the scoring after a defensive mix-up, before Stephania Farrugia’s direct free-kick and Stella Francalanza’s rebound sealed the result in the second half. Despite Hibernians reshaping and introducing multiple substitutions in search of a response, the Stripes managed the match confidently to close the gap in the standings.

Team Selections

Maleni Morales continued to grow in confidence between the posts for Birkirkara behind an unchanged back line led by captain Stephania Farrugia, alongside Stella Francalanza, Selina Anima and Lara May Azzopardi. Gabriella Zahra and Momo Ueda started in midfield, with Kay Axiak and Kleydiana Monteiro Maria Borges out wide. Amelia Vassallo led in attack alongside Ylenia Grech.

Maya Muscat started in goal for Hibernians behind the quartet of Georgiana Mifsud, Natalee Geren, Amber Galea and Cali Schechinger. Captain Nicole Sciberras started in midfield with Francesca Bartolo and Olivia Nazarko orchestrating further forward. Kayleigh Chetcuti and Sylvia Kabene operated wide, with Leah Ayres leading the attack.

How It Unfolded

The opening stages saw Hibernians enjoy the greater share of possession, but Birkirkara’s organisation without the ball set the tone early. The Stripes worked effectively in midfield to disrupt rhythm and limit clear opportunities, ensuring the Paolites were largely kept away from goal.

Cali Schechinger forced the first meaningful save when she drove inside from the wing, drawing a low parry from Maleni Morales, but Birkirkara gradually grew into the contest. Momo Ueda began to influence proceedings with long-range efforts and dangerous set-piece deliveries, while the Stripes looked increasingly comfortable building momentum.

By the half-hour mark, Birkirkara were carrying the stronger threat.

The breakthrough arrived in the 33rd minute following a well-worked sequence from a midfield throw-in. Stella Francalanza launched forward, Amelia Vassallo helped the ball on, and hesitation inside the Hibernians box left the defence exposed. Kleydiana Monteiro Maria Borges reacted quickest, needing only one touch to roll the ball into an empty net for 1–0.

Hibernians attempted to respond through wide play, with Sylivia Kabene delivering a dangerous cross that was well dealt with by Stephania Farrugia, but Birkirkara continued to edge the half. Further deliveries from Ueda kept pressure on the Paolites, with Maya Muscat called into action more frequently as the interval approached.

Half-Time Score: Birkirkara 3 – 0 Hibernians

There were no personnel changes at half-time, but Hibernians altered shape, switching to a back three with Francesca Bartolo joining Amber Galea and Natalee Geren in defence. Kayleigh Chetcuti moved into midfield alongside Olivia Nazarko and Nicole Sciberras, while Leah Ayres partnered Sylivia Kabene in attack.

The change initially brought encouragement. Ayres and Kabene combined for two strong opportunities in the opening ten minutes — first a cross that Kabene could not direct at the near post, then a low delivery from Kabene that found Ayres, only for Morales to close the angle and save well.

Birkirkara responded with their first change after 56 minutes, introducing Maia Gauci for Gabriella Zahra, and moments later doubled their advantage.

A direct free-kick from Stephania Farrugia in the 58th minute found its way through Maya Muscat’s grasp, a moment that visibly shifted momentum back toward the Stripes.

Hibernians’ Martina Borg reacted at 64 minutes with a quadruple substitution — Laura Muscat, Suzanne Farrugia Sacco, Yolande Attard and Ileana Farrugia replacing Olivia Nazarko, Kayleigh Chetcuti, Leah Ayres and Francesca Bartolo — but Birkirkara remained in control.

Just four minutes later the game was effectively sealed. Another Farrugia set-piece caused problems, Muscat blocked the first shot but Stella Francalanza reacted quickest to turn in the rebound for 3–0.

From that point, Birkirkara managed the contest with confidence. Hibernians continued to probe through set-pieces and forward runs from Natalee Geren, but clear openings were limited as the Stripes protected their advantage with calm defensive organisation.

Late on, Momo Ueda nearly added another after being released wide, only for Muscat to block well, but the outcome was already secure.

Final Score: Birkirkara 3 – 0 Hibernians

Standings & Next Matches

The result marks Birkirkara’s first victory — and first clean sheet — against top-three opposition in the league this season. It also narrows the gap to the Paolites as both sides continue to shape their end-of-season standings.

The two teams will break off for the international break. Birkirkara will hope to pick up the momentum as they return against second-placed Swieqi United on the 12th March at the Centenary Stadium (20:15). Hibernians will look to bounce back against Valletta on the 13th at the Charles Abela Stadium (20:30).

Until then, domestic football gives way to the international competitive fixtures with the European Qualification Group Phase kicking off for the FIFA Women’s World Cup. Malta will be facing Turkey away on the 3rd March, before welcoming Switzerland on the 7th March.
