Birkirkara continued their late-season rise with a 1–0 victory over Swieqi United at Dingli Ground, securing their first win against the Owls this season and back-to-back triumphs against top-three opposition. Both sides struck the crossbar before Kleydiana Monteiro Maria Borges’ second-half strike proved decisive, while the match also marked the return of Haruhi Sekura from injury. The result leaves Swieqi vulnerable in second place, with Hibernians now given the opportunity to leap to second in the standings in direct confrontation.

How It Unfolded
Birkirkara continued their late-season surge with a disciplined 1–0 victory over Swieqi United at Dingli Ground, securing their first win against the Owls this season and a second consecutive triumph over top-three opposition.
The match began with a brief delay due to ball pressure issues before settling into an early rhythm that saw Birkirkara attempt to impose their structure through controlled discipline, while Swieqi United sought to make transitions pay.
The Stripes fashioned the first opening in the fifth minute when Momo Ueda delivered a corner that was headed clear before Amelia Vassallo recycled the ball back into the area, though Patricia Araujo gathered comfortably.
Birkirkara again threatened in transition on twelve minutes as Kleydiana Monteiro Maria Borges broke into space, but her long-range effort lacked the power to trouble the Swieqi goalkeeper.
Swieqi soon grew into the contest and came agonisingly close to opening the scoring in the 21st minute. Andjela Kricak launched a precise long ball toward Salamatu Abdulai, who won the race behind the defence. Maleni Morales managed to get a touch but could not fully clear the danger, leaving Abdulai with an open sight of goal, only for the forward to send her attempt wide of the target.
Moments later Jade Flask tested Morales from a tight angle at the near post, the Birkirkara goalkeeper once again reacting sharply after earlier intercepting a dangerous low cross.
The Stripes responded on 28 minutes when Stella Francalanza combined well with Kay Axiak down the flank before Tammy Falzon blocked the resulting cross behind for a corner. From the set piece, Momo Ueda found Stephania Farrugia in the box, though the defender’s header drifted wide.
Both sides would then be denied by the frame of the goal in quick succession. Andjela Kricak rattled the crossbar with a powerful long-range strike for Swieqi in the 30th minute, before Momo Ueda returned the favour four minutes later with a fiercely struck free kick that cannoned back off the woodwork.

Birkirkara continued to threaten before the interval. Amelia Vassallo released Ueda into space in the 36th minute, but the midfielder could only find the side netting. Another late opportunity followed in the 44th minute as the Stripes pressed for the breakthrough.
Swieqi attempted to end the half on the front foot as Shona Zammit earned a corner just before the whistle. Ema Micallef delivered a dangerous ball into the area, but no player managed to make the crucial connection. Tammy Falzon’s second ball in looped over the bar with the sides remaining locked at the break.
Half-Time Score: Swieqi United 0 – 0 Birkirkara
Birkirkara began the second half with renewed intent. Lara May Azzopardi delivered a teasing cross in the 47th minute that narrowly evaded Ylenia Grech’s run at the far post. As the half progressed, the Stripes continued to look the more composed side in possession. Kleydiana Monteiro Maria Borges carved out another promising opportunity in the 65th minute, cutting inside before attempting to curl an effort into the far corner, though the shot drifted just wide.
Swieqi attempted to inject fresh energy into the midfield in the 73rd minute as Eva Koneva replaced Ema Micallef.
However, the breakthrough arrived shortly afterwards.
In the 75th minute, Birkirkara capitalised on a moment of pressure high up the pitch. Tammy Falzon was dispossessed with the defender crowded out as the Owls attempted to play out from the back. Kleydiana Monteiro Maria Borges latched onto the ball to curl a composed finish into the bottom-right corner to give the Stripes the lead.

Swieqi sought a response and attempted to increase their presence in midfield, with Koneva operating at the base of a diamond as Michaela Cachia pushed further forward. While the adjustment improved their circulation through midfield, Maleni Morales remained untroubled until the final minutes.
The Owls came closest to an equaliser in the 85th minute when Abdulai delivered an inviting cross into the six-yard area, but Jade Flask could not guide her header on target at the far post.
Further attacking changes followed soon after as Thea Ida replaced Sarah Urpani, prompting a reshuffle that saw Valentina Rapa move to right-back and Emma Xuereb join the forward line alongside Flask and Abdulai.
Swieqi pushed forward again in stoppage time, with Flask releasing Xuereb through the inside channel after a well-worked move involving Michaela Cachia and Valentina Rapa. Yet Morales reacted decisively, rushing off her line to gather the ball before Xuereb could pull the trigger.
There was still time for one final defensive intervention as Abdulai broke free behind the defence in the dying seconds, only for Stephania Farrugia to produce a perfectly timed tackle to extinguish the last hopes of an equaliser.
Final Score: Swieqi United 0 – 1 Birkirkara
