The Stripes have sought to strengthen their defensive line through the signing of Japanese player Nanako Kobayashi. The twenty-six year old joins Birkirkara in her maiden experience in Europe.
The former Japan U16 international brings versatility to the side, with a capability to play in the heart of the defence, but can also be employed as a full-back, as well as a holding midfielder. It is understood that the Stripes have secured Kobayashi on a short-term contract, with an option to extend for a further season.
The arrival provides further options for Jose’ Borg to rotate his defensive line, which has been less of a fixture recently. The defensive partnership between Stephania Farrugia and Charlene Zammit has been hampered by injuries to the two, with Valentina Rapa and Caitlin Rogers often preferred in their absence. Of course pulling the two into the centre of the defence opens places in the full-back and holding midfield positions. Although the side have displayed a wealth of options for rotation, it appears that Jose’ Borg has been keen on bringing a further option in the form of Kobayashi.
Having been training with the team for close to a month, it seems that the defender has impressed the coaching staff. It also means that Kobayashi has had time away from the spotlight to start forming an understanding of the team dynamics and the approach which the defending champions seek to impress in matches.
Supporters and adversaries could have the opportunity to see the defender in action first-hand tonight, in the top clash against Mgarr United, which kicks off at 20:30 at the Victor Tedesco Stadium.
