B’Kara Sink San Gwann

Birkirkara showed no mercy as they fired seven past San Gwann without return. Brisa Campos took the ball home again after scoring her second hat-trick in just 3 appearances for the team.

It was a chilly Tuesday evening but that did not deter Birkirkara from dishing out another strong performance, this time against strugglers San Gwann. Ruth Steer-Chetham opened the score with a powerful header into the top right corner in the 13th minute.

It took the league leaders some time to find the net again. However, Brisa Campos opened her account of the game at the 39th minute after capitalising on the miscommunication between the rushing goalkeeper Caruana and defender. Meanwhile, number 14 Veronique Mifsud headed home the third on the stroke of half-time from a corner.

Half-Time Score: Birkirkara 3 – 0 San Gwann

Jose Borg’s team showed no sign of slowing down as the second half got under way. Brisa Campos tapped the ball into the net after just 5 minutes of play and rounded off her hat-trick smashing the ball into the top right corner in the 61st minute. The striker looks to have settled quickly and seems to be enjoying her time on the pitch. She has found no problem finding the net having already netted two hat-tricks and looks deadly when afforded any chance to strike.

Gabriella Zahra chipped in with the sixth in the 73rd minute, whilst captain Stephania Farrugia grabbed a goal in the 88th minute to close things nicely for the stripes.

It was a rude awakening for San Gwann who enjoyed their last game out as they beat Mtarfa in a well-contested match. However, they would have expected nothing less from the league leaders whose only defeat this season came at the hands of giants Manchester United Women in a friendly.

Though San Gwann were the underdogs in the match, one wonders whether fielding striker Julia Egging would have helped to generate some pressure on the counter.

International Break & League Return

Teams will now break off for the international break, with several players from the B’Kara team readying themselves for their friendlies against Luxembourg, under the guidance of new Malta coach Manuela Tesse.

The stripes will face a tough test on their return to the league, as they will face second-place Swieqi FC. The stripes currently sit on top because they won the reverse fixture and will look to cement their place. Meanwhile, Swieqi FC will look to avenge the defeat which would set the stage for an exciting few final weeks of the season. The match will be played on the 1st March.

Meanwhile, San Gwann will play 4th place Mgarr United on the same day, and will look to take something from the match, despite the greens offering some stiff competition.
