The D.O.C. Goalkeeping Camp will return for the third time this October. Organiser and goalkeeping coach, Danilo Sgroi, discussed the motivation behind the camp and those who will be lining up to share their knowledge on the day to those between the ages of 7 and 15 aspiring to become goalkeepers.
The Details
The Goalkeeping Session under D.O.C. Academy will return to Marsaskala Ground this 12th October for the third time. Those attending will have a three hour session from 9 am to noon to get some new insight from quite a few well-known faces in the Maltese game.
Open for both boys and girls between the ages of 7 and 15, organiser Danilo Sgroi described the D.O.C. camps as, “Social spaces designed to help young goalkeepers, in this case between the ages of 7 and 15, grow in harmony. We push them to sweat, but also to have fun while learning: learning together, learning about themselves, understanding both their strengths and their limits, and working to turn those limits into resources. That, to me, is the essence of D.O.C.: being alongside goalkeepers and helping each of them bring out the hidden gems they carry within.”
Free Attendance For Girls
Danilo Sgroi has become a familiar face in the local scene, with experiences with San Gwann’s women’s sector, Hamrun Spartans and also now forming part of the Hibernians’ women setup and the women’s national team academy setup.
Addressing the local scene in relevance to the camp, Sgroi said, “This year I once again have the honor of working on important benches, both in men’s and women’s football. In Malta, the foundations are strong, and a promising future is being built.”
The camp will require 25 Eur fee to attend, which is being waived for girls. Sgroi addressed the women’s game in particular, “The women’s national team, in particular, has a strong identity and continues to grow, thanks also to the work of an extraordinary head coach (Manuela Tesse). Women’s football around the world is gaining more and more importance, and that’s exactly why this Camp will be not just an opportunity for learning, but also pure enjoyment and at no cost for the girls who take part.”
The Coaches
As usual, Sgroi is calling on a few faces that will support him on the day, all of whom bring a vast background in the game. “Alongside me there will be the talented Laurentiu Branescu, former Juventus and now with Hibs, as well as Coach Sharon Costantino, legend of Maltese football.”
Former national team player and new Hibernians’ coach Martina Borg will also give an introduction, “She will also be joining us, to inspire every player not to give up and to believe in their dreams – just as she did, playing at a high level abroad, embodying the aspirations of so many young footballers here.”
Besides experienced coaches, Sgroi will also welcome three young goalkeepers, including Justyne Caruana of San Gwann and Hibernians’ squad goalkeepers Maya Cachia and Maya Muscat who will be present during the sessions.
Those wishing to attend have until the 4th of October to register their interest. All details below or can be found on the socials of the camp.
