Fast Start Sets the Tone As Birkirkara Sweep Past San Gwann

Share

Birkirkara produced a strong display to claim a 4–1 victory away to San Gwann, capitalising on a fast start and repeated success in transition to secure three points. Captain Stephania Farrugia led the way, with Stella Francalanza and Izabella Stringer adding further goals, before Kleydiana Monteiro Maria Borges sealed the win with her first strike in Birkirkara colours. Morena Fanega pulled one back for San Gwann, while Justyne Caruana’s penalty save prevented the margin from stretching further.

Team Selections

Justyne Caruana continued her stay in goal behind a quartet of Kirstie Vella, Mariama Kasim, Maria Isabel Otalvarez Rubio and Kirsty Paris. Martina Schembri partnered Rhea Borg in front of the defence, with Rocio Figueredo trusted to tie things together further forward. Captain Annabelle Rapa and Morena Fanega started out wide, with Rodianne Zerafa trusted to continue leading the attack.

Emma Cortis remained in goal for Birkirkara. Selina Anima came into the defensive partnership with captain Stephania Farrugia. Lara May Azzopardi and Stella Francalanza continued to operate as the full-backs behind Kleydiana Monteiro Maria Borges and Kay Axiak. Gabriella Zahra and Ylenia Grech started in midfield, while Momo Ueda supported Izabella Stringer in attack.

How It Unfolded

San Gwann were punished almost immediately for a slow opening. Inside the first minute, a poor clearance from a corner fell kindly to captain Stephania Farrugia, who led by example by firing home the rebound. The captain was animated in celebration, lifting Birkirkara into a strong start, while San Gwann were already reeling before they had settled into the contest.

The match became stretched quickly, with both sides willing to exploit space behind the defensive lines. San Gwann responded with a well-weighted release from Rocio Figueredo to Rodianne Zerafa, but the right-footed effort was blocked by Emma Cortis, who reacted sharply before Birkirkara cleared. At the other end, Stephania Farrugia again pushed forward to support the attack, linking with Kleydiana Monteiro Maria Borges, whose curling effort drifted narrowly over the top corner.

Birkirkara’s threat in transition was constant. A long launch from midfield found Ylenia Grech in behind just after the quarter hour mark, and although Kay Axiak met the resulting cross at the far post, the youngster rushed her finish and failed to capitalise on the time afforded.

Jake Farrugia rushed to intervene as assistant referee Petar Petkovic got an earful from the Birkirkara bench after flagging Stella Francalanza offside, in what would have been a free-run on goal.

Nonetheless, the Stripes’ second goal arrived on the 25th minute. Izabella Stringer spread play wide to Kay Axiak, whose delivery forced a corner. From the resulting set-piece, Kleydiana Monteiro Maria Borges’ cross was met by Stella Francalanza, who guided a composed header into the bottom corner before immediately rushing back to the half way line ready for the restart.

San Gwann continued to struggle to contain the visitors’ momentum. Stringer added a third on 34 minutes, reacting quickest to fire home the rebound after Justyne Caruana had made an initial save.

Birkirkara sensed blood, peppering the goal with wave after wave of attacks. The goalkeeper produced a strong save to deny Momo Ueda moments later, before Izabella Stringer struck the crossbar with a header as Birkirkara’s full-backs pushed high and runners flooded the box. Momo Ueda also failed to convert from another delivery from Lara May Azzopardi, with the volley flashing off-target.

San Gwann offered little in response before the break, with a free-kick comfortably gathered by Cortis, and further chances falling Birkirkara’s way as the half closed.

Half-Time Score: San Gwann 0 – 3 Birkirkara

Birkirkara made two changes at the break, with Gloria Cassar and Amelia Vassallo coming into the fold instead of Ylenia Grech & Kay Axiak.

Any hopes of a San Gwann revival were extinguished early in the second half. After Stringer narrowly missed with a dinked effort, Kleydiana Monteiro Maria Borges produced a moment of quality in the 51st minute to mark her first goal in Birkirkara colours. The Portuguese struck a long-range effort into the top corner to make it 4–0.

Birkirkara continued to create chances even after rotating their squad with Krista Sacco replacing Izabella Stringer shortly after. Gloria Cassar scooping an opportunity wide from inside the area.

San Gwann finally found a response on the hour mark when Morena Fanega carved out space on the edge of the box and placed a low strike into the far corner to reduce the deficit.

San Gwann’ freshened up the midfield with Sabrin Blihi replacing Martina Schembri, as the side sought to continue what would be a memorable comeback. The hosts threatened to build momentum briefly. Rodianne Zerafa found herself free in the box following a lapse in concentration, but could only fire into the side netting from close range. That miss proved costly, as Birkirkara soon regained control.

Things perked up once again as the visitors were awarded a penalty on 64 minutes after Momo Ueda was nudged from behind, with referee Jake Farrugia earning another earful from the San Gwann bench this time. Gabriella Zahra stepped up, but Justyne Caruana produced an excellent save low to her left to deny the spot-kick, a rare bright moment for San Gwann amid a difficult evening.

Despite the miss, Birkirkara remained composed. Strong work ethic continued to underpin the defence and midfield with Kleydiana Monteiro Maria Borges and Momo Ueda testing Caruana further, forcing strong interventions. Stephania Farrugia passed up a rare chance by scooping a rebound header wide after another dangerous corner, while San Gwann’s attacking efforts became increasingly isolated.

Late substitutions did little to change the pattern for either side, with Maia Gauci seeking to keep San Gwann’s defence threathened on pace, while Alicia Mifsud and Thais Muscat were thrusted by Julian Camilleri in search of reducing the deficit. Maria Isabel Otalvarez Rubio came close in stoppage time with a looping effort that drifted just wide, but it was Birkirkara who comfortably saw out the closing minutes.

Final Score: San Gwann 1 – 4 Birkirkara
