The Malta Football Players’ Assocation (MFPA) held a session on financial literacy before the Christmas period. Delivered by certified professional, Patrick DeBattista, the practical session was just one of many initiatives intended to fulfil the objectives of the MFPA on player education and support in preparation for life after football.
Financial Literacy Session
The Malta Football Players’ Association (MFPA) have continued to put stock to their promise of increased player education with an introduction to Financial Literacy. The session was held toward the latter end of 2024, with certified professional and Financial Wellbeing Coach, Patrick DeBattista, from ‘Finance For You‘, delivering the content.
The session focused on an introduction to managing financials not just in a way to meet basic expenses but to ensure financial security in the future, accounting for troubled times and also investments. Those present were supported with a step by step plan and a template for immediate implementation into their lives.
Despite being open to all footballers, the session had an overwhelmingly male response. The mix of players, hailing from different domestic leagues, gave the opportunity for varied questions to arise. As different topics were discussed in view of the realities of the financial stability in players’ lives, practical tips were discussed on how best to tackle the real issues a player faces when managing their finances. The discussion was wide ranging, from how to build an emergency fund to the prospect of investments.
Another In A Number Of Sessions Targeted To Improve Players’ Standing
The session was just one out of several similar drives that have been organised by the Malta Football Players’ Association (MFPA). This in aim to fulfil the strategic pillars of the MFPA pertaining to education, health and well-being of players.
English language courses were also held and will continue to be held with the aim of improving the proficiency for those interested. The MFPA has also branched out another course to teach Maltese to foreign players playing in the domestic leagues.
Other sessions over the 2024 calendar year included the webinar series of ‘The Roar Room’ on female-specific health issues in sport, maternity and reproductive health & fertility. Further education courses are also supported through the ‘Life After Football’ scheme, with the intention of helping players to gain scholarships for academic courses on business and sports management, among other subject areas. Meanwhile, the MFPA also offers free club-wide sessions on First-Aid and Mental Health.
