Inter Women will become the fifth international women’s club to conduct their winter training camp in Malta at the start of 2026, in collaboration with VisitMalta. They will utilise Hibernians’ Tony Bezzina Stadium as their base and will play a friendly against the hosts women’s side, Hibernians Women.
A Training Camp In Malta That Will Include Local Presence
The Inter Women team will be utilising Malta as their base for the winter training camp between the 3rd and 7th January as they prepare for a return to competitive fixtures. The team is currently in fourth place in the Women’s Serie A, where they are scheduled to return in a direct confrontation against Juventus on the 18th January. Juventus lead Inter by two points, holding second place.
The training camp is being organised in collaboration with VisitMalta. Inter’s arrival in Malta will no doubt attract a combination of support due to the team’s following in Malta and the local link with their current number seven, Haley Bugeja.
It is confirmed that the Inter Women camp will include a friendly match against Hibernians Women’s team who are currently second in the Assikura Women’s League. According to Inter Women’s media, the match will be played on the 6th January at the Tony Bezzina Stadium at 19:00.
This confirms the fifth women’s club that will be utilising the islands for their winter training camp, following the announcement of a separate tournament that will feature German giants VfL Wolfsburg together with fellow German side TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, Dutch outfit PSV Women and Swiss team, FC Basel. That tournament will be played between the 11th and 14th of January, with all matches to be played at the National Stadium.
However, the match between Inter and Hibernians is thus far the only link announced between the international women’s football teams to be hosted in Malta and the domestic women’s football scene. The Assikura Women’s League is currently also on hiatus and is expected to return on the 15th January to accomodate fixtures.
Hibernians’ coach Martina Borg welcomed the opportunity to welcome the Italian side at their home stadium, “We are very looking forward to play home and host a team like Inter. The girls are now having a short break, but they are all really looking forward for the game. Even though we are aware of their strength, it should be a good opportunity for the players to get this international exposure and try to display a positive performance against a very strong team.”
Amhof Underlines Targets Of Growing Reputation
Helmut Amhof, representing Qmedia Limited, highlighted the importance of the Inter Women team’s visit in enhancing Malta’s reputation as a growing hub for women’s football events in sync with the company’s vision.
He said: “Kickstarting 2026 with women’s football is the central theme of our winter programme, and there is no better way to start the New Year than by welcoming the women’s team of one of Italy’s most popular football clubs.
“The Inter Women training camp will precede the inaugural VisitMalta Women Club Trophy, meaning that Malta will host five top-level women’s football teams from Italy, Germany, the Netherlands and Switzerland, during the first two weeks of January.
“I would like to thank VisitMalta for their support in the positive discussions we had with Inter FC regarding this training camp.”
The upcoming visit follows a previous Inter FC training camp held in Malta in December 2022, when the men’s team played friendly matches against Gżira United and Red Bull Salzburg at the Tony Bezzina Stadium.
