The Ilaji Football Group is poised to play an influential role in modern football development with operational presence and leadership in Nigeria, Malta, and the Czech Republic. Unveiled on Monday, its vision is expected to be a game-changer for Maltese football, offering a forward-thinking model that blends sporting excellence with educational and commercial sustainability, for responsible, inclusive and progressive football growth.

Launch Of The Group

Ilaji Football Group officially unveiled its strategic vision and brand identity in a press conference held at the Grand Exelcior hotel on Monday.

It is launched as an international football brand which was founded with a unified goal: to develop football players capable of playing and competing internationally, establish sustainable pathways into professional football, and raise operational and promote ethical standards within the sport.

Its structure integrates academy development, club ownership, and strategic partnerships, creating a structure that supports both sporting and commercial growth, offering youth athletes, opportunities that have never been offered before.

Dr. Justin Fenech, Deputy Chairman of the Group, highlighted the importance of offering players tangible international pathways, while ensuring both professional and ethical football development in both Nigeria and Malta.

“Ilaji Football Group stands for opportunity, excellence, and transparency. Our commitment is to create a system where talent from Africa and Malta can find a clear and structured route into European football,” he stated.

Dr Fenech remarked, “Today is a proud day, a culmination of over five years of work. We’ve studied models and clubs, and from vision we are here today to launch the Football Group, which will be the foundation of our collaboration. It will be beneficial not only for the clubs, but for the countries involved.”

He continued, “From an international perspective, it opens up the opportunity to collaborate with other countries but starts between the three existing countries. We want to create a single system throughout. Much like we do at Swieqi United, we have the aim of a holistic approach across men, women and academy in futsal and football, the aim is for all the clubs with the Group to work with the same common framework. In doing so, we aim to develop players, coaches and administrators with the same philosophy, and thus facilitate the sharing resources. Since there is common ownership, the clubs within the Group will function in similar way in international level.” From a local perspective, each club will then have to also satisfy the local jurisdictions.

Chairman Eng. Dotun Sanusi emphasized the Group’s foundation in community impact and youth empowerment, while highlighting its deeper social mission and reflecting on the values that inspired its formation. “Football is a unifying language. Through the Ilaji Football Group, we are building a bridge that connects continents, cultures, and dreams,” he noted.

Currently including Nigerian club, Ilaji FC, and Maltese club, Swieqi United, Group CEO, Timothy Gingell, announced that the group is currently closing off talks for the acquisition of FC Vysočina Jihlava, a professional football club based in the Czech Republic, guaranteeing that international pathways are established immediately. This strategic move marks Ilaji’s first major European expansion and reinforces its goal to create a network that supports player mobility, talent exchange, and international cooperation.

Presenting the Group’s operational and business strategy, Group CEO, Timothy Gingell, outlined a long-term plan focusing on sustainable investment, partner engagement, and brand development. He underscored the Group’s commitment to transparency and long-term planning as key factors in attracting investors and collaborators. This was echoed by Group Chief Commercial Officer (CCO), Prince Adesina Araoye, who emphasized that striving towards financial sustainability will enable the group to be at the forefront of its goals, ensuring that it can build targets that will leave a lasting legacy.

A Game-Changer For Malta

The concept is commonly found across Maltese shores in football, with some of the most famous examples including City Football Group, which holds Manchester City, Melbourne City and Palermo among a host of other clubs. The Eagle Football Group, of which Michele Kang is a major owner, encompasses Olympique Lyonnais, London City Lionesses and Washington Spirit, among others making waves in the game.

However, it marks a significant milestone for Malta, with Swieqi United becoming the first club to form part of a wider group that will share resources and create pathways for its players, coaches and administrators, to Africa and also mainland Europe.

Dr Justin Fenech, underscored his hopes of the Group’s approach injecting new vision into development within Maltese football, “We need to ask questions: Are we developing players? How are we doing it? Can we do it better? I believe this is one of the projects that can lead us there as Malta. If we work together with the MFA and the fellow clubs, then I believe we can get success.”

Swieqi United General Secretary, Dr Matthew Borg, echoed the importance “I strongly believe that this is a game-changer within Maltese football and cannot stress enough that collaboration is crucial for Malta to grow football.”

The press conference was attended by MFA Vice Presidents Ing. Trustin Farrugia Cann and Mr. Adrian Casha, with the latter endorsing the venture, “I’ve always admired Swieqi United because of the way they do things. It is a club of vision, at fifteen years old it is a young club, but the vision augurs well for the future. In my meetings with President Bjorn Vassallo I’ve always stressed the importance of developing talents, in players and referees. I wish Ilaji Football Group the best and I am sure it will reap benefit in the future.”

Mayor for the locality of Swieqi, Mr. Noel Muscat, and Mr. Francesco Postiglione CEO of Casumo, also shared their enthusiasm on the project.

Football Concept, Facilities & Business Approach

From a high-level view, the Ilaji Football Group is expected to spend its first year getting things running on the ground across the three clubs, with an expectation to reap business benefits by 2030.

Jasper De Muijnck will be spearheading the technical side as Head of Football within the Group. He outlined the approach on player development, playing philosophy and technical structure, aimed at nurturing young talent, their professional pathways, and aligning academy training standards across all three clubs in Nigeria, Malta and the Czech Republic.

“We aim to have a common football philosophy and to back the path for development objectively with data. In today’s world, when a club is finding a player, it is about a complete player profile, not a single video. We’ve started by setting a curriculum at Swieqi, with common playing principles and targets for players to reach. Of course once we have a central philosophy with complete player profiles, a scout can have a better picture of the players we want to bring in, and also it gives us a better opportunity to compare our players across leagues to guide players when they are ready to make the leap to a different club.”

Questioned about the approach in the short-term for the existing clubs to share facilities especially given the network of clubs in mainland Europe, Group CEO Timothy Gingell remarked, “Organising camps is definitely one of the opportunities we are looking into, so there’s a lot of thought into organising camps locally in Malta and also in Czech Republic, as well as within Nigeria.”

Dr Justin Fenech highlighted the current objective of organising a tournament in Nigeria, with the aim of making Swieqi United the first Maltese club to play in a tournament in the country.

Highlighting the impact of the acquisition of Czech club, FC Vysočina Jihlava, Timothy Gingell explained the facilities available for the Group within an hour’s drive from Prague, “We have a proper stadium, two training pitches adjacent to the stadium and a further two pitches five minutes away and a further two more ten minutes away. There’s a hostel, dormitories, sauna, anything we need we can make use of. So, certainly we are looking at leveraging this for our clubs and also want to expand this opportunity for clubs who would like to utilise this.”

Presented as a vision that blends sporting excellence with educational and commercial sustainability, offering a forward-thinking model for responsible, inclusive and progressive football growth, with operational presence and leadership in Nigeria, Malta, and the Czech Republic, the Ilaji Football Group is expected to be an interesting one to follow in the manner it can harness an influential role in modern football development.
