Mgarr United and San Gwann both announced their coaching setups in the past weeks, with an element of continuity and change underpinning both announcements. Valletta confirmed the retention of the Brazilian duo, goalkeeper Micka de Souza Ramos and Eduarda Martins Souza.
Mgarr United Announce Coaching Trio
The Greens have confirmed their coaching setup for the upcoming season, with Ryan Vella leading the senior women’s team. The announcement confirms that the club feels that Vella is the right man for the job following his work as interim throughout the latter portion of last season. He took charge amid the mid-season departure of Michael Mangion and his assistant Neville Cassar, during which he steered the team toward points against all top three teams, Hibernians, Swieqi United and Birkirkara.
Besides his work with the women’s team in the latter part of the season, Vella brings with him coaching experience in the men’s youth sector, having achieved promotion to Section C and near-promotion to Section B. As an assistant coach, Vella also steered the men’s senior team to promotion.
The team also announced a new goalkeeper’s coach in Eddie Bartolo, who will be making the leap from the men’s Mgarr United setup. Having had experience with Balzan, Marsa, Birkirkara and within the Malta Football Association, Bartolo brings plenty of coaching experience.
On the other hand, Mgarr United confirmed their faith in fitness coach Matthew Muscat, who joined the team last year and has been given the thumbs up for next season.
San Gwann Confirm Coaching Setup
San Gwann are another team who have put together their coaching setup for next season. Julian Camilleri has been confirmed for another season, which does not come as a surprise considering the points amassed and the identity he has started to form in the team.
There will also be continuation with Denilson Borg remaining as his assistant coach. Having taken over the U19 team at the latter portion of last season, Denilson Borg has been also trusted to be the right man to take the youth team forward next season as their coach. He takes over from Luke Camilleri.
On the other hand, there will be a different face leading the U16 team in Axl Xuereb*, who takes over from Andjela Kricak. Xuereb* will also be assisting Denilson Borg with the U19 team. It will be his maiden foray in the women’s sector.
Valletta Extend Brazilian Duo
Valletta also confirmed the retention of the Brazilian goalkeeper Micka de Souza Ramos, as well as outfield player Eduarda Martins Souza. Having been scouted through the ‘Starscout’ series, the duo established themselves in the Assikura Women’s League last season. Regulars in the first eleven, they helped the team to secure a fifth place finish prior the split, and an unbeaten streak of nine matches following the split to finish in the top place of the ‘Bottom 4’ group.
Goalkeeper Micka de Souza Ramos showed keen attributes of a modern goalkeeper, conducive to playing the ball from the back, as well as a keen ability to sweep. Meanwhile, Eduarda Martins Souza was often employed in defence or in midfield, helping to build attacks while also chipping in with a few important goals. As the next season unfolds, City will hope that the retention of the two Brazilians will help to take the team to the next level of challenging the top four.
