Malta’s Women’s U-17 National Team has been drawn in group B3 and will face Croatia, Luxembourg, and Azerbaijan. The first round of matches is set to be played in Autumn and will mark the country’s return after an absence of two years.
Malta’s Return to the Competition
Malta will be making a return to the competition alongside Andorra. Malta’s preparations in anticipation of these qualifications have kicked off with a training camp under the guidance of head coach Vince Galea and assistant coach Martina Borg.
The competition features fifty teams split into two groups forming League A and League B. Malta will form part of League B, which features twenty-two teams including six relegated from League A following the 2022/2023 competition.
The Round 1 draw for League B pits nations from three pots, with pot 1 featuring those relegated from League A. Group B3 features Croatia as the side relegated from League A, while Luxembourg was drawn from pot 2. Malta completes the group alongside Azerbaijan from pot 3. League B features six groups, while League A is comprised of seven groups.
What is at stake?
Those within League B will play a mini tournament to get promoted to League A. Promotion is earned by the six group winners, and the runners-up who have the best performance against the teams that won and those that finish third in the group.
The final eight teams playing in the 2024 finals will be decided based on the outcome of League A – Round 2, featuring the seven best teams and the host nation, Sweden.
