San Gwann and Mtarfa will conclude today’s proceedings at Dingli Ground (KO 16:30). Julian Camilleri’s team head into it looking to improve on recent showings, while Mtarfa attempt to keep up the upward trajectory amid player shortages.

The Path To Improvement

San Gwann head into the match seeking to extend their positive results against the Blues, but also looking to bounce back from a narrow 1-0 defeat at the hands of Valletta. The team will be especially disappointed to have had a number of chances but failed to capitalise, ultimately yielding the three points to Valletta.

San Gwann’s Julian Camilleri praised the performance but lamented the points lost, “We had one of our best performances against Valletta, but we missed many chances which could have made the difference. We’ve lost plenty of chances which would have made us comfortable in the league table. Now we must work to earn back what we lost.”

On the other hand, Mtarfa displayed signs of improvement against Lija Athletic, across the pitch. Brandon Spiteri provided the assessment about the match, “Against Lija we continued to show that we are improving gradually. We deserved to score at least a goal, but we were unlucky. Overall, the performance was a positive one, yet we did not get the result that we hoped for. We defended quite well and also had our chances.”

San Gwann Seeking The Win, Mtarfa Lament Saturday Fixtures

San Gwann were effective in their press and also in fluid attacking football to earn commanding victories in the previous matches against Mtarfa. However, despite still searching for their first points, the Blues have been on the up in their organisation with the new coaching contingent.

San Gwann’s Julian Camilleri suggests that they are not taking this lightly, “We’ve seen Mtarfa take a different look in the past two games. They were just a goal down against Valletta until the first-half, and had not conceded against Lija Athletic by the same time. It continues to show that we must not take this match forgranted and that we must take to the pitch with a winning mentality.”

On the other hand, asked about building on the positives of the previous matches in an inspired defensive display together with an improved attacking approach, Mtarfa’s coaching contingent suggest that the team will be going into the match with one hand tied behind their back.

Asked about building on recent improvement, coach Brandon Spiteri provided a sombre response, “With regards to the game we have to express our disappointment, especially because the fact that games are being played on a Saturday is affecting our team a lot. One must bear in mind that these players play out of passion and are not professionals, with many players working in catering and on shifts that they cannot easily change. Unfortunately, we have a lot of Injuries and unavailable players and so we are very limited. It will be a very challenging game.”

The two teams will take to the Dingli Ground at 16:30, following the top-four clash between Hibernians and Swieqi United (14:00).
