Final announcements are being made as the season kicks off into full swing and the transfer window trickles to a close. Valletta, Lija Athletic, Mgarr United and Birkirkara all confirmed new signings, most of whom already made appearances in their first matches. Mtarfa confirmed more of their staff members, while Maya Lucia was announced by Polish side Gdansk for the upcoming season.
Valletta Welcome Sarah Fenech & Hannah Grima
Valletta brought in two more youngsters to their ranks from Mgarr United in Sarah Fenech and Hannah Grima. The duo were key parts of the squad that competed under the SKMM emblem in the Assikura Women’s Youth League last year, with Fenech also making some appearances for Mgarr United in the Assikura Women’s League in the past as well.
Sarah Fenech debuted in the opening match of the Assikura Women’s League in which Valletta earned a late draw against Lija Athletic last Friday. Meanwhile, Hannah Grima was also among the squad sheet in the Citizens’ maiden match in the Assikura Women’s Youth League yesterday.
Meanwhile, Lija Athletic brought on board Kaia Piccinino. Formerly of Mtarfa and Mgarr United, she will continue to add depth to Jethron Azzopardi’s squad. The side started their league campaign by securing their first ever point against Valletta. They return to action tonight against the defending champions, Birkirkara, at the Centenary Stadium (KO 20:15).
Mgarr Welcome Egging, Renew Mizzi
The Greens captured young talent Julia Egging from San Gwann. The youngster ebbed last year but will return to action this season donning new colours. With an eye for attack, the Greens continue to bolster their forward line with a talent that they will hope can help them to continue building on their strong start to the season.
The club also announced the renewal of Maria Mizzi who continues her stay with the Greens. She was deployed from the bench in a dominant victory against Mtarfa in the opening match of the season.
Cabral Switches From Green To Stripes
Birkirkara displayed a dominant start to the season, with Luana Cabral being the one to kick off the scoring and ultimately grabbing a match ball along the way. Having had her start in the Maltese league last season with Mgarr United, the Brazilian appears to have settled very quickly in her new setup.
The midfielder was among the strongest in defensive midfield duties last season, never shying away from a challenge and displaying a strong work ethic. It appears that the Stripes are seeking to utilise her in a more offensive stance, with the bet paying off thus far.
She spoke keenly of achieving success with the Stripes, “I am very happy that I will wear this shirt with so much history behind it! The fans can expect a lot of determination, dedication, and an athlete who never gives up. I really want to keep the team on the top shelf, winning trophies and many other great things. May it be a wonderful season for us!”
Mtarfa Announce More Team Staff
The Blues confirmed Gaetano Papaleo among the staff for the upcoming season. The Italian took charge of the senior team in their opening match against Mgarr United. It marks his first foray into football in Malta. He led Swieqi United’s futsal team last season, with the team securing the Knockout title.
The club also confirmed that Karmelysa Tordo will be assisting in the team staff. Meanwhile, Christian Curmi is leading the U19 team after having spent the latter portion of last season leading the senior team alongside Brandon Spiteri.
Maya Lucia Moves To Gdansk
Maya Lucia will switch from Croatian champions Osijek to Gdansk for the upcoming campaign. The forward moves after a year in Croatia, with ZNK Split before moving to Osijek in the mid-season window. She will set foot in Poland’s leagues for the very first time, after having also a strong showing with Malta’s national team, against Northern Ireland and Portugal last July.
