Mgarr United stand one win away from a historic first league title as they face defending champions Swieqi United under the Centenary Stadium lights (KO 20:15). Dorianne Theuma insists her side have “nothing to lose,” focusing on adaptability, growth, and defensive improvement, while Ryan Vella remains measured despite the stakes, stressing control, preparation, and collective strength as the unbeaten leaders look to seize their moment.
Moments Of Brilliance Amid Injury Blows & Determination To Be Better
Swieqi United will be doubly determined to delay Mgarr United’s celebrations as the two take to the pitch tonight. A win for Mgarr would confirm that the title exchanges hands from Swieqi to Mgarr.
The two come into tonight’s match on the back of victories.
Swieqi United came away with a 6 – 1 victory against Valletta, in a match where there were several shifts in positions, including most notably a more attacking place for Jade Flask who claimed a hat-trick, as well as Emma Xuereb later on in the match who also got on the scoresheet.
Dorianne Theuma confirmed that the decision for the reshuffle was multi-pronged, “It was partly due to availability, but it’s also aligned with how we want to evolve as a team going forward. We’re working on building flexibility within the squad, and that means players understanding different roles and responsibilities. With a small squad, diversity and versatility become even more important. We need players who can adapt and give us solutions in different areas of the pitch when required.”
The Swieqi coach continued to praise her squad’s attitude, “I’m very happy with the commitment the players are showing in adapting to these changes. That attitude is crucial for us as we continue to grow and improve.”
On the other hand, the team has continued to struggle to keep enemies at bay. The Swieqi coach was questioned on whether she believes the goals conceded could be forgiven under the reasoning of a youthful and developing squad, or whether there needs to be a balance against that rhetoric to avoid falling into the trap of excuses.
“We’re not happy with some of the goals we’re conceding, a number of them are definitely avoidable. We’re very open and honest between us about that. Development is part of where we are as a group, but it can’t become an excuse. If we want to grow, we have to learn quickly and show that through playing. Consistency, especially defensively, has to improve.”
She finished, “The responsibility belongs to the whole team, not just the back line. Defending it’s about concentration, decision-making and managing key moments better.”
Meanwhile, Mgarr United maintained their unbeaten streak courtesy of a stunning strike by Yulya Carella despite what seemed to be a nervous opening. However, in assessing the result, Ryan Vella rejected a reliance on individuality in big matches, citing the team’s determination to settle as soon as possible and the creation of several chances.
The Mgarr coach replied, “Although I agree that the team was a bit nervous in the first fifteen minutes, I thought that the team did really well to settle afterwards, and started controlling important aspects with and without the ball as time went on. We’re lucky enough to have a lot of technical players that can unlock a game with one pass, shot , or set piece. Having said that, we created enough chances to win the game, hit the crossbar and the post and barely gave any chances away to Hibernians as well.”
It was not all roses for the Greens, with Rebecca Bajada being forced off the pitch and Ryan Vella confirming the extent of the injury, “Unfortunately she suffered an ACL injury which will make her miss the rest of the season.”
Questioned about the impact of the injury on the team, Ryan Vella continued, “Rebecca was doing very well this season, winning her place in the starting eleven of the national team as well, showing that she’s one of the best in her position. So, obviously it wont be easy to replace her. Luckily we have players who can play multiple positions, so we’ll do the needed adaptations to fill in the gap left by her absence in the best possible way.”
Will History Repeat?
A victory is necessary for the Greens to confirm their claim to the title this evening. It would be a poetic swing dealt against this year’s defending champions who claimed their own maiden title in exactly the same way last year, following a win against the then defending champions, Birkirkara.
Questioned on how much having lived that experience helps them to prepare for this match, or whether she believes that the best approach would be to consider this match in the same way they did the ones before, Dorianne Theuma replied, “We understand the situation, having been in that position helps you appreciate what’s at stake. However, we have nothing to lose at this point. This game will be treated like any other. We focus on our performance, our standards and our preparation. Whatever the context of the match, our responsibility is to go there, and play to win, nothing less.”
Similarly questioned about the ability to control nerves against the occasion, and the impact of certainly needing a win on the preparation for the match, Ryan Vella weighed in, “As a team we set goals in the beginning of the season that were long term, but also we set short-term goals match by match. So, for us nothing changes, as we always want to make sure that we prepare in the best possible way to win the upcoming match.”
While acknowledging the weight of the match, Ryan Vella provided a level-headed view, “Yes we know that this game has extra pressure as we can be crowned champions, but we know as well that after this game there are four other games remaining. Whatever happens in this game, we’ll do our utmost to end the season in the best possible way.”
The stage is set for another major chapter to be written in the season 2025/26 as the defending champions, Swieqi United, take on the yet unbeaten league leaders, Mgarr United, with the latter honing in toward a victory to confirm their place in history.
Kick-off is due at 20:15 at the Centenary Stadium.
