Patricia Ebejer started in goal for Mgarr United. Leanne Cefai started at right-back, with Yanina Mendez continuing to operate on the left. Milena Stagno was given the nod to partner captain Abigail Camilleri in defence. Maia Debono partnered Shania Spiteri in midfield. Elisa Xuereb was trusted on the wing while Valeria Villegas Caly supported on the other side. Luz Hernandez supported Ines N’Guessan in attack.

Rhea Borg captained the side following Annabelle Rapa’s announced retirement, operating on the flank, while Nilayza Attard occupied the opposite wing. Maria Isabel Otalvarez Rubio started in midfield with Thais Muscat. Morena Fanega supported attacking duo Rocio Figueredo and Rodianne Zerafa.

How It Unfolded

Mgarr United continued their dominant league form with a 6–1 victory over San Gwann at the Charles Abela Stadium, in a match that also marked the visitors’ first outing under new interim coach Denilson Borg.

Mgarr signalled their intent early and wasted little time in taking control of the match.

The opening goal arrived in the fourth minute when Leanne Cefai delivered a deep cross from the right, finding Ines N’Guessan at the far post. The forward knocked the ball down perfectly into the path of Yanina Mendez, who fired convincingly into the net to give the Greens an early lead.

Just five minutes later, the same combination struck again. Cefai once more sent a dangerous delivery into the area, with N’Guessan again providing the knockdown — this time for Luz Hernandez, who finished from close range to double the advantage.

San Gwann endured a difficult opening spell and struggled to settle into the game, though Rocio Figueredo attempted to spark a response down the flank shortly afterwards. Mgarr, however, maintained relentless pressure, hunting possession aggressively and immediately pushing forward whenever the ball was regained.

Despite the early setback, the visitors managed to pull a goal back in the 16th minute through a moment of sharp pressing. Maria Isabel Otalvarez Rubio won the ball in midfield before releasing Morena Fanega, whose long-range effort struck the post. Rodianne Zerafa reacted quickest, firing the rebound into the net to reduce the deficit.

The goal briefly injected belief into San Gwann, with the visitors producing a determined defensive spell while also threatening on the break. Rocio Figueredo nearly found a route through shortly afterwards, dribbling past Patricia Ebejer before Milena Stagno cleared off the line to preserve Mgarr’s lead.

The champions responded with renewed attacking intent and restored their two-goal cushion in the 25th minute. Valeria Villegas Caly delivered from the wing, and Luz Hernandez connected first time to place a precise finish into the bottom corner.

The game remained open as both sides created chances. Zerafa attempted another effort that lacked the power to trouble Ebejer, while at the other end Villegas Caly burst forward before crossing toward Hernandez, who was forced to settle for a corner.

San Gwann’s new coach Denilson Borg remained in constant communication from the touchline as he attempted to organise his side, while Ryan Vella adjusted his team’s structure amid minor positional changes.

Mgarr would extend their lead again before the break.

In the 41st minute Maia Debono regained possession in midfield, curling the ball toward Luz Hernandez, who had drifted wide. The forward drove into the box and calmly placed a low finish beyond Geona Muscat to complete her hat-trick.

San Gwann attempted to respond late in the half through Morena Fanega, whose long-range strike forced Ebejer into a parry, but the Mgarr goalkeeper dealt confidently with the resulting corner.

Half-Time Score: Mgarr United 4 – 1 San Gwann

Mgarr made a swap at the break, bringing on Brenda Borg in midfield, while Milena Stagno made way, trigerring a shift for Leanne Cefai into the centre of the defence, while Maia Debono operated at right-back.

The Greens continued to control the tempo after the interval, though San Gwann briefly threatened from an early corner as Rhea Borg rose in the box but failed to direct her header on target.

However, the hosts soon resumed their attacking pressure. Luz Hernandez teed up Ines N’Guessan with a well-worked move, but the forward misfired the finish.

San Gwann attempted inject fresh energy with a substitution in the 55th minute, introducing Fatma Al Girbi for Sabrin Blihi as Maria Isabel Otalvarez Rubio moved deeper into defence.

Despite the adjustment, Mgarr largely dictated possession, forcing San Gwann to focus on containing the flow of attacks while attempting occasional counter-attacks.

A promising moment arrived for the visitors in the 64th minute when Alicia Mifsud delivered a cross toward Rodianne Zerafa, who nodded the ball down for Morena Fanega. She struck centrally, allowing Patricia Ebejer to parry before Mgarr quickly launched a counter-attack through Yulya Carella.

Ryan Vella continued to rotate his squad, introducing fresh legs on the flanks before making a particularly significant double substitution in the 69th minute.

Veronique Mifsud made her long-awaited return from injury, while Paula Ciappara also entered the contest.

Both substitutes would soon leave their mark.

In the 79th minute Mifsud marked her return with a memorable moment, curling a direct effort from the corner flag that bounced awkwardly at the near post before finding the far side of the net. The goal added significance after her lengthy spell on the sidelines, with the midfielder engulfed by the team as the home support made their presence heard.

Mgarr continued pressing forward and were rewarded again four minutes later.

Brenda Borg won possession deep in her own half and immediately launched a swift counter-attack, finding Valeria Villegas Caly on the diagonal. The midfielder delivered a perfectly weighted pass into the path of Paula Ciappara, who made no mistake in finishing into the left side of the net to complete the scoring.
