League leaders Mgarr United delivered a commanding performance for a 5–0 victory against Birkirkara, extending their lead at the top to eleven points. Leanne Cefai sent the side into the lead in the opening half, with the Greens’ sustained pressure in the second-half leading to a comfortable scoreline following a brace by Valeria Villegas Caly and goals from Yulya Carella and Amber Grech.

Team Selections

Giulia D’Antuono started in goal for Mgarr United, behind the trusted back-four of Yanina Mendez, Abigail Camilleri, Leanne Cefai and Rebecca Bajada. Maia Debono and Amber Grech continued to operated in midfield, behind captain Brenda Borg who was deployed further forward. Yulya Carella and Alejandra Villegas Caly operated out wide, with Valeria Villegas Caly leading the attack.

Emma Cortis started in goal for Birkirkara behind an unchanged defence of Stella Francalanza, captain Stephania Farrugia, Haruhi Sekura and Lara May Azzopardi. Ylenia Grech and Gabriella Zahra occupied midfield. Kleydiana Monteiro Maria Borges and Kay Axiak continued their stay out wide, with Momo Ueda supporting Izabella Stringer in attack.

How It Unfolded

Mgarr enjoyed the majority of possession from the outset, probing patiently against a Birkirkara side focused on maintaining defensive shape. Despite a positive start for the Stripes, early complications emerged when Haruhi Sekura was forced off through injury, prompting a defensive reshuffle that saw Maia Gauci come in and slot at left-back and Lara May Azzopardi move centrally.

Despite Mgarr’s control, Birkirkara initially held firm. Valeria Villegas Caly thought she had given the hosts the lead close to the quarter-hour mark after a neat one-two on the counter with Brenda Borg, but the flag ruled the effort out for offside.

Though having rare opportunities at the other end, a crucial interception from Abigail Camilleri prevented a dangerous low cross from Birkirkara’s Kleydiana Monteiro Maria Borges, who had been released down the flank following tidy midfield interplay involving Ylenia Grech.

Birkirkara threatened from a set-piece which Momo Ueda struck powerfully from just outside the area. Though powerful, the effort drifted wide of the near post.

As the half progressed, Mgarr continued to find pockets of space. However, the side was wasteful in front of goal, with chances arriving without the clinical finish to match. Amber Grech had another opportunity to test Emma Cortis from distance after the half-hour mark, arriving on the edge of the box to meet a cut-back from Yulya Carella, but she too could not keep it down.

Still, the Greens persevered with creation and the breakthrough finally arrived five minutes before the interval — and in unexpected fashion. Leanne Cefai struck from distance, catching Birkirkara off guard and breaking the resistance that had held firm for much of the half.

Half-Time Score: Mgarr United 1 – 0 Birkirkara

Mgarr went into the break with a lead that reflected control if not yet dominance, but any lingering doubt was removed almost immediately after the restart. Just two minutes into the second half, Yanina Mendez’s in-swinging corner was met by Valeria Villegas Caly, whose header found the net to double the advantage.

Mgarr pressed further on to add to the tally. Alejandra Villegas Caly tested Emma Cortis with a low drive from distance before delivering another dangerous cross moments later, only for Stephania Farrugia to deny Yulya Carella at the decisive moment.

The third goal arrived three minutes shy of the hour mark. Yulya Carella curled a powerful effort towards the far post from distance, and although Emma Cortis managed to get hands to the strike, the ball forced its way over the line to make it 3–0.

Birkirkara struggled to stem the flow as injuries and enforced changes took their toll, with further substitutions disrupting any attempt to regain rhythm. Amelia Vassallo replaced Izabella Stringer, while Krista Sacco replaced Emma Cortis in goal.

A rare attacking moment saw a low cross from Amelia Vassallo flash through the Mgarr box, but the chance came to nothing as the final touch eluded the Stripes, with the hosts remaining in control.

Meanwhile, Mgarr also freshened things up bringing on Ines N’Guessan instead of Yulya Carella, while Shania Spiteri and Gaia Antonella swapped with Alejandra Villegas Caly and Gaia Antonelli. Ylenia Debono and Maria Mizzi made late introductions for Abigail Camilleri and Rebecca Bajada.

Mgarr continued to rotate and maintain intensity up front, and the fourth goal following from another Yanina Mendez in-swinging corner. Valeria Villegas Caly reacted quickest to fire home the loose ball on in the 84th minute. The victory was completed five minutes later in spectacular fashion as Amber Grech unleashed a stunning long-range strike into the roof of the net.
