Malta’s Women’s National Team return to competitive action in the FIFA Women’s World Cup Qualifiers after earning promotion, facing Turkey and Euro quarter-finalists, Switzerland, in two weeks time. Yet with kick-off approaching, ticketing, broadcasting and supporter arrangements are still to be confirmed, while preparations for other upcoming national fixtures are already well underway.
The March window also extends beyond the senior side, with youth women’s teams set for friendlies and European qualifiers in what shapes up to be a busy period across all levels.
Senior Team Aiming To Sustain Place After Promotion
The first women’s international break looms and with it brings excitement led by Malta’s senior women’s national team as they kick-start competitive matches in the FIFA Women’s European Qualifications for the World Cup 2027.
Manuela Tesse’s team sets off on a dual task as they bid to accrue enough points to avoid relegation to League C, following their second promotion from the UEFA Women’s Nations League competition last June. Additionally, their standing in the group will also have an impact on their path for qualification for the World Cup.
The team will be beginning their competitive matches in just two weeks, away against Turkey on the 3rd of March (KO 15:00). This will be followed by a high-profile showdown against European quarter-finalists Switzerland (ranked 25 in the world) in Malta at the Centenary Stadium on Saturday the 7th March at 19:00.
It continues to highlight March as an exciting and busy month for Malta’s national teams. This as the men’s team face Luxembourg (ranked 102 in the world) in a play-off for their bid to become promoted for the first time from League D to League C. With the home match penned in for the 26th March (KO 18:00 at the National Stadium), tickets for that match went on sale at the end of January – two months before – and it is understood that broadcasting details are ironed out as well.
The men’s match against Luxembourg will enjoy not one supporter group in the South End Core, but a second one in the Ultras Malta. The two signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the MFA as announced at the end of January – the second in just a year – to give their utmost support. The MFA is also organising ticket sales for the away leg.
Given the silence surrounding the much closer matchdays for the women’s national team, who is bidding to maintain their place against top-ranked opposition after having achieved promotion last June, The Sporting Fan sent queries regarding the sale of tickets and the broadcasting details to the Malta Football Association (MFA).
The MFA advised that tickets are expected to go on sale later this week. Broadcasting details are not yet available and no timeline was provided on when to expect confirmation on this. It is also unclear when and if the MFA will announce a Memorandum of Understanding with the same supporter groups (South End Core & Ultras Malta) for the matches surrounding the Women’s National Team.
The Women’s National Team competition will kick off with the two matches listed above, with a double-header against Northern Ireland between the 14th & 18th of April. The final two matches will be played in the beginning of June (5th and 9th) with matchdays set by UEFA.
Youth Teams In Action
The senior national teams are not only the ones in action. The boys U16 and U17 are currently in action, with plenty of fixtures coming up for the ladies too.
David Attard will be leading Malta’s U19 Women in two friendlies against Romania in the upcoming international break. The two friendlies will be played at the Centenary Stadium on the 28th February (11:00) and the 2nd March (14:00).
This is expected to be in preparation for the U19s’ competitive European Qualifications matches that are penned between the 9th and 15th of April. Malta will be facing Israel (on the 9th), Bulgaria (12th) and Khazakhstan (15th).
In the meantime, Malta’s U16 women will be travelling to Moldova for a Development Tournament, continuing to be led by Clint Tabone. The team will be playing between the 12th and 17th March, facing the Faroe Islands (12th), Bosnia & Herzegovina (14th), and Moldova (17th). All matches are expected to be played at 14:00.
Much of this group will be expected to be led by Clint Tabone again in the European Qualifiers of the U17s in the end of March. These matches are expected to be played at the Centenary Stadium between the 27th and the 2nd April. Malta will be facing Lithuania (27th March at 14:30), Belarus (30th March at 14:30) and Estonia (2nd April at 11:00).
Questioned about any changes in technical setups the MFA only confirmed that former Birkirkara coach, Melania Bajada, will be assisting David Attard for the upcoming U19 friendlies against Romania. The MFA gave no response regarding new player trials for any cohort.
Youth friendlies will be free of charge, while the U17 qualifier matches will be priced at 3 Euro. No ticket information is available for the U19s European Qualification matches at this stage.
Once again broadcasting details are still unavailable for any of the youth matches mentioned above. Despite this, all things set up the first half of 2026 as a packed one for Malta’s women’s national teams as the island continues to attempt to maintain a presence in each age group.
However, until the first international window coming up for the U19s and senior women’s national team, the players will be entertaining one final set of domestic fixtures throughout the week. Those competing in Malta will be featuring in the Assikura Women’s Youth League between today and tomorrow, before the final weekend of matches of the Assikura Women’s League commences from Thursday.

Thanks for putting this together. Finding NT fixtures is more difficult than it used to be. I wish they had kept the old MFA Matchcentre around for a little longer, at least until the new one covers all NTs.
