Swieqi United and Mtarfa will close out the final double header for the calendar year in the Assikura Women’s League at Dingli Ground, starting at 16:30. Dorianne Theuma reflected on the mid-week performance against San Gwann that led the team to the top of the table, while pushing her team for a good performance against silent Mtarfa.

Swieqi’s Ascendency Against Strugglers Mtarfa

Swieqi United rose to the top of the table following a 4 – 0 victory against San Gwann. However, the side were made to work for it with San Gwann continuing to display a disciplined approach. Although the Owls captured an early lead and controlled the majority of play, the team had to be patient in extending their lead.

Swieqi United coach, Dorianne Theuma, hailed the Yellows for their discipline while evidently pleased with her team for coming away with the result to rise to the top of the table, “We knew the game against San Gwann would be a tough challenge, given how well they defend and their strength on the counter-attack. In the first half, we found it difficult to break through their defense, but in the second half, the team stepped up the tempo, played some excellent football, and ultimately scored three more goals. I was especially pleased with how we controlled the game, showing maturity and composure, particularly during key moments in transition.”

Credited by Julian Camilleri for the relentless pressure, one key aspect that continued to stand out is the movement displayed by Swieqi United’s midfield as they sought to dislodge players from a structured shape.

Questioned about how much freedom she gives her players to switch positions, also amid an increasing level of analysis between the sides, Dorianne Theuma gave some insight into her philosophy, “I try to give all players the freedom to express themselves, as long as they stay in sync with the team. These days, both Shona Zammit and Sarah Urpani, along with the support of our young central midfielders like Michaela Cachia and Ema Micallef, are building a strong understanding of each other’s movements. Together, they’re doing an excellent job and adding versatility to our attack.”

On the other hand, despite having created some opportunities, Mtarfa were unable to recapture goalscoring form against Valletta. The team ultimately succumbed to a 4 – 0 defeat. Although the Blues continue to have some quality individuals among a group of promising youngsters, the lack of tangible upward trend will certainly be weighing heavy on the side once more.

Turbulent Conditions

The two teams are expected to take to the pitch in Dingli Ground amid strong winds that will continue to add another challenge in the mix.

Dorianne Theuma suggested that the side is not particularly focused on closing the match early amid a packed calendar schedule for many of their players. Rather, the Swieqi United coach is focused on her team taking to the match with the goal of maintaining their place at the top, “Our main goal is to secure the three points while delivering a strong performance, from all the players involved in the game. It’s important to stay focused and approach the match with the same intensity, regardless of the opponent, to maintain our momentum at the top of the table.”

No word was received from the Mtarfa’s Gaetano Papaleo ahead of the match.

The two teams are expected to take to the pitch at Dingli Ground at 16:30, following the clash between Birkirkara and Valletta (14:00). The two matches close out the Assikura Women’s League for this calendar year.
