Valletta and San Gwann Seeking Positive Restart

Share

Valletta and San Gwann will be seeking to get three points on the board this afternoon at 16:30 at Dingli Ground. Jean Lopes and Julian Camilleri welcomed the international break to push their teams following shaky performances, with the two sides eyeing a positive afternoon.

Shaky Ground

Having been the stronger of the Bottom Four pool, Valletta & San Gwann were both dealt tough matches just before the break. Valletta just edged out Mtarfa with a 3 – 2 victory, while San Gwann fell to their first defeat against a team outside the Top Four this season with a 1 – 0 loss to Lija. It sets up an interesting encounter this evening as the two seek a response.

Valletta’s Jean Lopes discussed the break as a fruitful one, “We took advantage of this break to work on the physical and technical aspects of our athletes and it was a good period because we had a lot of players available and most of them were able to participate in our training program. Finally, we have our full team, without any injuries to play in the next match.”

San Gwann’s Julian Camilleri welcomed the break, “I’ve had the opportunity to reflect on some of the situations where we have struggled and plan accordingly. We trained with a high intensity in all sessions and we tried to improve on our weaknesses. As for injuries, we are still recovering from two injuries sustained against Lija, with one of them looking more serious.”

Tight Affair Expected

San Gwann have won two of three encounters, with the first match sending the teams home level. The two coaches were probed on their thoughts of this evening’s encounter and whether they believe the recent results for both teams, shapes this one differently.

Valletta’s Jean Lopes believes a close affair is in order once more, “Facing San Gwann is always a very difficult task. Even suffering their first defeat in the Bottom Four, they still hold the first position and have a significant advantage. It will certainly be another very difficult match. We will try to play our best football tomorrow to be able to add three more positive points in the competition.”

San Gwann’s Julian Camilleri showed equal respect to the Citizens, “It’s never been an easy match against Valletta and we are two teams who fight until the very end. I believe we must go to the pitch with a winning mentality to earn a victory which will push us to close the objective we set at the beginning of the season.”

The two teams will take to the pitch at Dingli Ground at 16:30, following the clash between Mtarfa and Lija Athletic (14:00).
