Established sides Mtarfa and Mgarr United will team up with Gozitan side S.K. Victoria Wanderers (SKVW) in the U16 and U19 leagues, under the guise of SKMM. Despite being a new name in the leagues, SKVW boasts a few alumni who are among the brightest talents in women’s football.

A New Beginning

The teams announced the partnership on Sunday morning, with the new side set to play under the brand SKMM. It marks the end of participation for Zebbug, which formerly combined with Mtarfa & Mgarr United under the name of Mtarfa Mgarr Zebbug (MMZ).

Mtarfa and Mgarr United are two teams that are separately established in the senior’s league but will continue to join forces in the U-16 and U-19 categories. Meanwhile, S.K. Victoria Wanderers have been steadily developing a group of youngsters in Gozo who will now have the opportunity to compete in the leagues for the first time due to the partnership.

Though S.K. Victoria Wanderers are new to the league competitions in Malta, their work over the years has produced talents such as Ann-Marie Said (Birkirkara FC), Emma Xuereb (Swieqi United), Leanne Cefai (Mgarr United) and Maria Farrugia (Lewes Women). Therefore their participation, alongside the established sides of Mgarr United and Mtarfa, will be an interesting development in local women’s football.

Coaching Staff

The new side has also announced the coaching staff leading the youngsters. Nenad Tomic of SKVW will be the U16 coach, while Mark Grima of Mgarr United will head the U19 categories. The side will also employ Melissa Galea of Mtarfa as their goalkeeper’s coach.
