No Room For Error As Mgarr And San Gwann Open Knockout Campaign

Mgarr United begin their Knockout title defence against San Gwann with no margin for error, as Ryan Vella shifts focus from an unbeaten league campaign to maintaining consistency in a winner-takes-all format. Denilson Borg, meanwhile, emphasised long-term development and attacking identity despite recent results, as San Gwann look to challenge the holders in a single-elimination clash.

Wrapping Up The League & Setting Sight On The Final Trophy

San Gwann will be kicking off the Assikura Women’s Knockout against the holders, Mgarr United, with the team having finished the league commitments in a defeat to Birkirkara.

Denilson Borg praised the effort from his team, despite walking away without points, “The players gave everything on the pitch, and I’m happy with the effort and overall performance. However, the fact that we didn’t take anything from the game shows that there is still a lot of work to be done.”

He continued to show enthusiasm toward the project, “If the club decides to continue working with me, I’m really looking forward to implementing changes and continuing to build this team in the right direction.”

Meanwhile, Mgarr United had a rapturous second half against Hibernians to wrap up their maiden league title with a convincing win. Ryan Vella believes his team has achieved its main objective for the season, “Our aim at the start of the season was to be challenging for all trophies possible. Having said that, we still put the league as the first priority.”

The Greens do not appear ready to let others claim the Knockout from them so easily though, “Now that we managed to get the job done, our focus shifts on this competition, which is still very important for us as the Knockout was the first major trophy we brought to Mgarr. So our aim will be to defend it and at the same time keep the consistency we shown throughout the league campaign.”

Thoughts On The Format

The Assikura Women’s Knockout has gotten an injection this year, with the Malta Football Association having published a statement at the beginning of the season that for the first time the trophy will yield some winnings for the team, besides the piece of silverware. There are no available details on the exact winnings.

At the same time, the two coaches were questioned on their thoughts on a potential re-thinking of the format. Particularly, given that the holders will be in the preliminary round, while others receive a bye into the semi-final with the luck of a draw, the two were questioned for their views on the potential of seeding teams on the competition.

Denilson Borg welcomed the suggestion among others, but underlined that the decision goes beyond the power of the clubs, “There are many systems that could be considered, such as seeding based on league standings or previous performances. However, that decision ultimately lies with the MFA, and we respect whatever format is in place.”

Ryan Vella was also enthusiastic about rethinking the third major trophy, “As we’re only six teams, I feel that there are many options one can adopt where luck isn’t involved. Seeding can be one thing, another thing can be for example to create two groups of three teams and alternate them by league position so you mix up the teams. Then teams within each group play a match against each other and then the winners of both groups play in a final. This way all teams play a minimum of two matches.”

Like his counterpart, Vella acknowledged that though there are ideas, the decision remains firmly with the governing body, the Malta Football Association, “Having said that, we don’t control these situations. So our job is to prepare to the situation we face.”

No Chance For Mistakes

While the discussion evolves, the current format is one where a single performance is all decisive in the round. That means this afternoon there will be no room for error in a winner takes all to proceed to the semi-final.

San Gwann lost all four matches against the Greens this season, but Denilson Borg confirmed he is not interested in fielding a defensive team, “I’ve said this in every interview, and I’ll continue to repeat it—I have a clear game model, and I won’t change it.”

“Of course, you always adapt based on the players you have and the specific context of the match. But my philosophy is something I’ve built throughout my playing career (and still learning from my coaches), and I continue to develop it through my coaching experience and by learning from others.”

Borg underscored the importance of long-term thinking, “Success takes time. Mgarr, for example, have just won their first league title, but that came after years of consistent work. We are on our path, and we will continue building step by step.”

Meanwhile, Mgarr United’s Ryan Vella is not underestimating the strengths of his opposition, despite his team coming into the match as favourites, “San Gwann is a disciplined side that can cause trouble to any team especially on the counterattack. We’ll prepare for this encounter to the best of our abilities and hope that we manage to make it to another semi-final.”

The two teams kick off a double-header in the Assikura Women’s Knockout at 13:00 at Dingli Ground. Their match will be followed by the fixture between Birkirkara and Swieqi United at the same venue, with a scheduled kick-off at 15:30.

The other two teams, Hibernians and Valletta received a bye to the semi-finals.
